Dr. Tabuchi received a medical degree in 2001 from the Okayama University Faculty of Medicine and in 2011, obtained a PhD degree in public health from Osaka University, focusing his thesis on chronic tuberculosis infection among homeless people, while simultaneously working as a hematologist and internal medicine physician in various clinical practice settings. Shortly after, Dr. Tabuchi transitioned into the field of tobacco control, specializing in the research of heated tobacco products in Japan. He is currently an Associate Chief in the Department of Cancer Control Center at the Osaka International Cancer Institute and the Principal Investigator of his own longitudinal internet cohort study, The Japan Society and New Tobacco Internet Survey (JASTIS), which investigates perception, attitude and use of heated tobacco products, electronic cigarettes and conventional tobacco products in Japan since 2015. He is also the Principal Investigator of an internet study, The Japan COVID-19 and Society Internet Survey (JACSIS), which investigates medical, socioeconomic and life-related factors during and after COVID-19 pandemic. Dr. Tabuchi’s recent honors include winning the Encouragement award from the Japanese Association of Cancer Registries in 2017, as well as the Kiyoko Goto and Paul Bourdarie Cancer Foundation Award in 2018.
