Richard trained as a public health physician in the UK. He has over 25 years of experience in tobacco control practice and research in the UK and New Zealand, focusing particularly on population-based tobacco control policies. Richard is a Deputy Editor of the journal Nicotine and Tobacco Research and is a Fellow of the Society for Research on Nicotine and Tobacco. Richard is a member of a range of committees and working groups related to public health and tobacco control, including: expert advisory committees of Hāpai te Hauora (the NZ national tobacco control advocacy service, the NZ Asthma and Respiratory Foundation, and Health Coalition Aotearoa.
