Dr. Mary E. Thompson is Distinguished Professor Emerita of Statistics at the University of Waterloo in Waterloo, Ontario. She holds a B.Sc. from the University of Toronto, and an M.S. and Ph.D. from the University of Illinois. She was a founding Co-Director of the University of Waterloo Survey Research Centre. She is Director of the Data Management Core for the International Tobacco Control (ITC) Policy Evaluation Project.

Since the beginning of the ITC Project in 2002, Dr. Thompson has been instrumental in developing the sampling design, research protocol, and analytic plan for all of the ITC cohort surveys. In recent years, her research interests have focused on the analysis of data from complex surveys, statistical methods in the social sciences, and the design of survey data collection for public health research, particularly for the ITC Project; she has collaborated in work on the spread of disease on contact networks, and in spatial analysis of environmental influences on smoking behaviour.
