Dr. Katanoda has been working in the field of tobacco control since 2005, when he started working for the National Cancer Center in Japan. One of his major contributions was editing the “Tobacco White Paper” produced by the Ministry of Health, Labour and Welfare in 2016, which comprehensively evaluated the health effects of tobacco smoking and the situation of tobacco control in Japan, providing the scientific foundation for legislative measures. Dr. Katanoda has also been involved with health surveys including The Japan Society and New Tobacco Internet Survey (JASTIS) project, which investigates perception, attitude and use of heated tobacco products, electronic cigarettes and conventional tobacco products in Japan. Since 2017, Dr. Katanoda has been the Chief of the Division of Cancer Statistics Integration at the National Cancer Center and maintains leadership roles on numerous epidemiological and public health associations in Japan.
