Esteve Fernández

Dr. Fernández is Professor of Epidemiology and Public Health at the School of Medicine of the University of Barcelona, Head of the Tobacco Control Unit and Direwctor of the Cancer POrevention and Control Program at the Catalan Institute of Oncology. His main areas of research include cancer epidemiology and tobacco control, with focus on tobacco products, electronic cigarettes, and exposure to second-hand smoke and aerosols. He is interested in socioeconomic and gender determinants of health, in methodology and the teaching of epidemiologic methods, and journalology.

He has been Principal or Associate Investigator in several research projects in tobacco control funded in competitive calls by SANCO, FP7, H2020 and Horizon Europe programs, and by Spanish agencies. He has published +400 scientific papers (half of them as first or corresponding/senior author) in peer reviewed journals and has an H-index of 44 (Web of Science). Dr. Fernández is a consultant or has provided  advice for tobacco control to WHO (EURO region and TFI programme), several governmental agencies in Europe and he currently is the President of the Tobacco Control Advisory Board of the Government of Catalonia.

He has been the editor-in-chief of Gaceta Sanitaria, the journal of the Spanish Society of Public Health, has served as President of the Spanish Society of Epidemiology and as Academic Director of the Minorca Summer School of Public Health. He currently is member of the Editorial Advisory Board of the journal Tobacco Control and serves as reviewer to other journals in the fields of public health, substance abuse and general biomedical sciences.
